In Custody - Anita Desai Could I have the story of Imtiaz Begin instead? The ineffectual and cowardly Deven frustrated me, while Anita Desai's writing kept me engaged in her story, and her scene-setting, her ability to create the space of the story is so strong I feel like I'd recognise Mirpore if you dropped me there. At the very end, when Deven read Imtiaz Begin's letter, I felt sure that her poetry would be - something, something that touched Deven's heart as Nur's poetry had, that despite the debacle there would be a moment of beauty and new work to carry Deven along in life. Instead, I'm not entirely sure what happened.
